Easy Way to Explain Venn Diagrams to Children

What is this?

Find ideas to help you design an activity to support children's understanding of using a Venn diagram to display data. You can use this in class or adapt for children in your class who are working at home. This learning activity is based on first level experiences and outcomes.

When designing learning activities, think about the range of learners in your class and their individual circumstances.

Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) experiences and outcomes: First Level

  • Using technology and other methods, I can display data simply, clearly and accurately by creating tables, charts and diagrams, using simple labelling and scale. (MTH 1-21a)

Purpose of the activity

At early level children will have had experience of collecting and organising objects for a specific purpose. They should also have had experience of interpreting data displayed simple graphs and charts. They should also have contributed to displays where one object/drawing represents one data value. This activity builds on prior learning by giving children an opportunity to display data in the form of a Venn diagram.

Learning activity

Children may be working in class or at home with the support of a member of their household. For children working at home, use whichever method they are familiar with to share the learning activities with them.

  • Explain to children that a Venn diagram is used to sort and display data. A Venn diagram shows the relationship between groups of different things in a visual way. It allows you to sort groups according to given criteria.
  • Ask children to draw a Venn diagram like the one below.

    Venn diagram

  • Ask them to sort the numbers above into the correct section of the Venn diagram.
  • Remind children that numbers that are in the 5x table and are odd numbers will sit in the overlapping section to show that they match each criteria.
  • Ask children to justify their placement of numbers to someone else.
  • Venn diagrams are a really useful way of combining skills. Children can practise their data handling skills while learning about number facts, the properties of shapes etc.
  • The context of this activity should be adapted to suit the age and stage of children in your class.

Extension activity

  • Ask children to create 4 questions based on the data in the Venn diagram. They could then ask someone else to answer their questions.

National Benchmarks

  • Uses a variety of different methods, including the use of digital technologies, to display data, for example, as block graphs, bar graphs, tables, Carroll diagrams and Venn diagrams.
  • Asks and answers questions to extract key information from a variety of data sets including charts, diagrams, bar graphs and tables.

Possible approach to assessing learning

There are opportunities for children to discuss and collaborate on this task whether they are working in class or at home. Consider how the approaches could be adapted depending on your platform for home learning.

  • Plan and provide opportunities to support self and peer reflection and review of completed work. This should help children identify what went well and what could be developed further.
  • Encourage children to try their questions out with one another and to explain the answers if they have completed the extension task.
  • Children working at home may upload photos or a record of their work to their online learning journal, or online learning space on Google classroom or Microsoft Teams. This will give you the opportunity to provide feedback and next steps.

The following reflective questions could also be used to consider children's progress and next steps:

Based on the data in the table:

  • how well are children able to sort the numbers into the correct section?
  • how effectively are children able to justify their decisions about the placement of numbers?

To what extent are they able to explain their answers to the extension task questions?
